The review is devoted to the analysis of F. A. Ulmasov’s current research on the traditional Eastern monody of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The author F. A. Ulmasov, proposed a new approach to understanding and studying Eastern monody, based on the concept of multidimensional musical art,realized through the creative act of making music by the soloist. The concept of multi-dimensionality is based on F. Ulmasov’s idea of the interaction of two planes of musical perception and thinking – internal (in the mental sphere) and external (manifested in the act of playing music). This fundamental theoretical position is defined by the author as the principle of the functional duality of opposition (DFO). The concept of duality of the Eastern monody system, which is substantiated in the monograph, is developed on the material of Tajik and Uzbek traditional music (solo vocal and instrumental, as well as ensemble performance). The author applies, in addition to General scientific and artistic methods, interdisciplinary research methods, as well as methods of analyzing musical and audio texts. As a result, the author identified two types of DFO (diffusing DFO and contrasting DFO), and the basic principles of the structure of the musical body of Eastern monody, typical for each of them. The scientific novelty and theoretical value of the research allow us to see the prospects for its continuation in the following areas: developing semantic fields of musical intonation, internal plans of the creative process, and the study of vertical harmonic-functional organization of monody (“monodic harmony”).
