The relevance of studying the musical culture of the Arctic peoples is enhanced due to the current processes of intensive economic development of this region. Unfortunately, the state of musical folklore and indigenous languages of Arctic peoples is critical. The article analyzes the main stages of studying the musical culture of the Arctic peoples (academic, ethnographic, musicological), and notes the contribution of Russian and foreign musicologists to the research of the subject. Authors characterized some main methodological concepts relevant to the study of music of the Arctic peoples such as intonation-acoustic culture of an ethnic group, regional- historical typology of musical culture of the peoples of Siberia, concepts of early-folk intonation, sounding landscapes of the Arctic. The musical culture of the Arctic peoples is the part of the intangible cultural heritage of Russia, and needs to be studied, preserved, and published as soon as possible. The theoretical reasoning in the article is illustrated by examples of folk musical genres and music notation of Chukchi throat-singing.
